It seems insanely simple, but also a bit spooky: the online giant Amazon has introduced payment with the palm of your hand. The first tests have been running for three years, now the system called “Amazon One” is to be rolled out extensively.

By the end of the year, all around 500 branches of the US supermarket chain Whole Foods are to be equipped with the technology. The company belongs to Amazon.

The special thing about the payment method: Customers really need nothing but their hands. No wallet, no phone, no smartwatch. Everything works just from the palm of your hand.

The system was previously only available in 200 Whole Foods stores and a few US airports and stadiums.

Advantages of buying alcohol

If you have linked your Amazon account to the payment service, you only need to place your hand on a special reader – and the amount will be debited from your account. Discount campaigns for customers of Amazon’s “Prime” subscription are also applied automatically.

Another advantage: If you want to buy alcohol (in the USA from the age of 21), you no longer need to dig out your ID.

Everything sounds very relaxed! But: Of course, the prerequisite is that you entrust something as personal as your hand to Amazon.

Would you pay with the palm of your hand? App users can access the survey here.

The group promises: “Amazon One will under no circumstances pass on data about the palm of the hand to third parties, not even at the request of authorities.” Such demands will only be met if there are legal orders.

Amazon emphasizes that the stored images of the palm of the hand are “unusable” for third parties. This is because it is a proprietary combination of palm and vein images. Also, the data would not be used or sold for marketing purposes.

So far, no market launch of the sci-fi payment method has been announced for Germany.

In this country, customers also have to do without the cashless “Amazon Go” shops. In these, cameras are used to automatically record which products a customer puts in. The amount is then automatically debited from the account. Without a cashier, without a self-service checkout.

The cashless shops have been around for five years. Germany, however, went away empty-handed: the branches only opened in the USA and Great Britain.
