The IPL was telecast by Sony Group from the first season of 2008 to 2016. In 2017, Star (Disney) acquired the broadcasting rights. It will end in 2022. Sony and Disney are expected to pay for the broadcasting rights from 2023 onwards. Both companies had earlier hinted at this. If Sony’s attempt to regain IPL broadcasting rights, Disney is not ready to let go of the golden duck.

PrimeVideo, which recently went live on sports, had acquired the rights to the home matches of the New Zealand men’s and women’s teams. PrimeVideo broadcasts the Test series against Bangladesh and the limited overs series against India. But in order to get the IPL broadcasting rights, they have to have a television channel. Since Amazon does not have its own channel, it needs to reach a partnership with a television channel.

Reliance is also new to sports broadcasting. However, with the arrival of Geo, Reliance had streamed domestic and other international matches, including the Ranji Trophy, on Geo TV. Reliance also has TV channels like Colors and MTV. Therefore, if they acquire the IPL broadcasting rights, they will be able to telecast matches on television as well. Reliance has already telecast cricket matches through the Colors channel. Reliance will benefit from acquiring the IPL broadcasting rights to become the largest mobile network in the country. Therefore, Reliance will also come forward for the IPL broadcasting rights.
