Wicker was developed in 2012 by a team of security experts, in an era when WhatsApp was in its infancy and encryption was not part of its promise, only the ability to send free text messages. Its application was characterized by particularly strict security, and is considered one of the most protected communication applications in the world.

The problem is that the latter fact has reportedly attracted many criminals, such as drug dealers and pedophiles, who have used it to conclude dubious deals and transfer prohibited content. Those reports included scathing accusations against Amazon that it wasn’t doing enough to stop abuse of the app — and now it seems it’s decided that’s enough to shut it down.
