News from Angola – Ambassador Miguel César Domingos Bembe presented this Friday, in Asmara, letters of credentials to the President of the State of Eritrea, Isaias Afowerki, to whom he conveyed greetings from the Angolan Head of State, João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, as well as best wishes for prosperity and well-being to your counterpart and the Eritrean people.

According to the statement that Noticias de Angola had access to today, diplomat Miguel Bembe thus becomes the first Ambassador in history to be accredited in the State of Eritrea, residing in Addis Ababa.

During the meeting, the Angolan diploma highlighted and expressed its determination to work towards strengthening and expanding relations of friendship and cooperation between both countries and peoples.

At the accreditation ceremony, Ambassador Miguel Bembe highlighted that there is a large Eritrean community residing in Angolan territory, which is dedicated to business activity, especially in the fields of trade in industrial goods, general wholesale and retail trade, and manufacturing industry .

On that occasion, the representative of Angola defended that it was indispensable and urgent to accelerate the process that aims to create the basic conditions inherent to the launch and consolidation of bilateral cooperation, taking advantage of the potential and opportunities offered by the two countries, as well as corresponding to the will of both peoples.

To this end, he stated that it is pertinent to promote the negotiation and signing of essential legal instruments to boost and expand cooperation relations between both States.

The Angolan diplomat highlighted the political-diplomatic, economic and commercial areas, as well as defense and security as those of greatest relevance for bilateral cooperation.

Regarding the political-diplomatic domain, he suggested the negotiation and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the Establishment of Political Consultation Mechanisms between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea.

In the defense and security sector, Ambassador Miguel Bembe, who yesterday delivered the Letters to the Eritrean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Osman Saleh Mohammed, proposed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Security, the implementation of cooperation in the area of combating terrorism and organized crime, and exchanging experiences in the areas of maritime security and combating maritime piracy.

In terms of potential, Eritrea has agricultural resources (corn, barley, vegetables and livestock) and mineral resources (copper, gold, silver and zinc). It also has a large flow of funds from its diaspora.

With 5 million inhabitants, the State of Eritrea borders Sudan, to the west, Ethiopia, to the south, and Djibouti, to the southeast. The northeastern and eastern parts of the country have an extensive coastline along the Red Sea, with Saudi Arabia and Yemen on the other shore. The Dalaque archipelago and the Hanish islands also form part of its territory.

Residing in Addis Ababa, diplomat Miguel Bembe has held the position of Ambassador of Angola to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Community for Africa since April 27 of this year.

He is also accredited as Ambassador of Angola to Djibouti, with non-resident status, since October 23rd.
