Before the visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Kiev, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk again demanded heavy weapons from Berlin. Ukraine needs 12,000 anti-tank and 1,000 anti-aircraft missiles to defend against a Russian invasion, Melnik said in an interview with Bild TV on Sunday evening, February 13.

Scholz’s visits to Kiev and Moscow, scheduled for February 14 and 15, respectively, the Ukrainian ambassador called the “last chance” to resolve the conflict over Ukraine by means of diplomacy. “We already have a feeling that the war is becoming more and more inevitable,” Andriy Melnyk stressed. According to him, the government of Ukraine is ready for the “worst-case scenario” in which Kiev “may be bombed in the coming days.”

Russian air and sea superiority

Melnik acknowledged that Russia has superiority over Ukraine in the air and at sea. “Here we are truly easy prey” for Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Ukrainian diplomat stated.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, in an interview with the ARD media company on the evening of February 13, also warned of a “dangerous situation” in the conflict over Ukraine. At the same time, Burbock said that so far “there are no signs that the armed confrontation is a settled matter.”

According to the West and Ukraine, Russia has pulled over 100,000 troops to the border with Ukraine. The United States said that Russia could attack Ukraine at any moment. Moscow denies that it has aggressive plans towards Ukraine and, for its part, accuses NATO of arming Ukraine and carrying out maneuvers near Russian borders. Ukraine has repeatedly criticized Germany for refusing to supply arms to Kiev.
