The Ambulance and Emergency Service warned “citizens against passing through the coastal road in the city of Zawiya, due to the armed clashes that broke out in the city recently,” noting that “the situation is now moving towards complete calm.”

The agency explained in a statement, “The area of the clashes is near the vegetable market and Bir al-Ghanam Road until the traffic light on Al-Daman Street.”

He stressed that “the city is witnessing armed clashes in the mentioned area,” explaining that “the entire coastal road of Zawiya is a source of danger to citizens.”

The Ambulance and Emergency Department announced, “The evacuation of 42 families and 4 newborn children from Zawiya, after the clashes in the city stopped.”

The agency confirmed, “The evacuation of 4 families from Al-Basatin Clinic in cooperation with the Libyan Red Crescent, in addition to 4 newborn babies who were transferred to Al-Zawiya Hospital.”

He added that “his elements evacuated about 38 families from Khartoum Street adjacent to the clashes,” noting that “the situation is now moving towards complete calm.”

Armed clashes took place in the city, which caused fires to break out in citizens’ properties. Citizens appealed to the security authorities and the Government of National Unity to quickly intervene and protect the civilian population in the city, due to the recurrence of armed clashes in the city.

It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Zawiya has witnessed unrest, as there are competing armed groups there, constantly fighting with weapons, causing tension and fear among civilians who suffer from the conflict between these armed groups.

The arms proliferation crisis is one of the most important challenges facing security in Libya. The United Nations estimated in previous reports that about 20 million weapons are circulating outside the state’s authority.
