Yesterday, December 6, the American manufacturer of microchips and electronics AMD introduced its own new MI300 chip is a so-called AI accelerator. This type of chip is used to speed up neural networks and other artificial intelligence systems. According to experts, this is one of the most important events in the company’s history, as AMD thereby enters the actively developing market of AI accelerators.

Now the leader in this market is Nvidia Corporation. After AMD’s announcement, Nvidia shares fell 2.3%. AMD shares were down 1.3% yesterday but were up 1.2% in the after-hours.

AMD expects its revenue from AI accelerators to reach $2 billion in 2024, with total company revenue of $26.5 billion. AMD CEO Lisa Su also made a rather ambitious forecast for the development of the AI chip market as a whole: in her opinion, in the coming in four years it will reach $400 billion. Back in August, AMD made a much more modest forecast for the same period – $150 billion. For comparison: the entire chip market, according to IDC, was $597 billion in 2022.
