AMD has expanded support for its upcoming Medusa Point APUs by introducing the GFX1171 architecture identifier to the Mesa 26.3 graphics driver.

The open-source Linux graphics stack is preparing for hardware that has yet to hit retail shelves. Developers working on the Mesa graphics driver have pushed an update that lays the groundwork for unreleased components as AMD prepares for the upcoming Zen 6-based Medusa Point chips.

Internal Architecture IDs and the RDNA 4m Family

The code addition centers on a specific identifier rather than a consumer product name. Inside the Mesa 26.3 graphics driver, developers have added support for GFX1171, which functions as an internal GPU architecture ID similar to older targets like GFX1100 and GFX1200.

These identifiers appear consistently throughout Linux drivers and development tools well before physical hardware reaches the market. The GFX1171 sits directly within the RDNA 4m family, marking a continuation of driver preparation that began earlier this year.

Tracking the Hardware Variants

The engineering effort involves rolling out multiple related targets sequentially. AMD first introduced GFX1170 earlier this year, followed subsequently by GFX1171 and GFX1172. All three targets share the exact same RDNA 4m classification under the hood.

Current driver code reveals no functional differences among these three specific GPU identifiers. This indicates that the engineering team is systematically expanding support for multiple hardware variants rather than rolling out entirely new graphics features or architectural leaps with each separate ID.

Integration Into Medusa Point APUs

While AMD has kept retail branding under wraps, industry reports connect these driver additions directly to future silicon. Industry tracking suggests that these are destined for the Zen 6-based Medusa Point APUs, which are positioned to succeed the current Strix Point processor family.
