NVIDIA is making huge profits with its computer graphics cards adapted to the export restrictions that the US has imposed on China, which has made AMD see the light. Now there is a boom in everything related to artificial intelligence, especially graphics cards for computing, as they are the ones that can best execute large language models (LLM). That is why AMD, in the words of its executive director Lisa Su, sees an opportunity in creating specific models of accelerators for the Chinese market.

China is a very important market for us, certainly in our entire catalogue, and certainly in the accelerator market. Our plan is of course to comply with US export controls, but we believe it is an opportunity to develop products for our customers in China who are looking for AI solutions, and we will continue to work in that direction.

The US ban applies to graphics cards that have more than a certain communication bandwidth, which led NVIDIA to create the A800 with 400 GB/s NVLink instead of the usual 600 GB/s. There is no clear list of export restrictions, since in the end the US decides it after the company that is submitting the export application. AMD may take similar steps to limit its accelerators and allow them to be sold in China to profile revenue.
