AMD has announced the Radeon RX 9050 graphics card, marking the company’s first desktop hardware release in nearly a year.
Memory Architecture and the Return of the 4GB Desktop Card
A brand-new AMD Radeon card has just been announced, bringing specifications that signal a notable change for entry-level gaming setups. While AMD’s official specification page lists the Navi 44-based card (a shared platform with the 9060 and 9060 XT) with a Max Memory Size
of 8GB, listings from partner manufacturers like ASRock show the hardware arriving in two flavors: 4GB and 8GB configurations.
Built on AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture, the lower-tier card features a 64-bit memory interface (using half the physical memory versus the 128-bit version on the 8GB card), 16 compute units, and a boost clock speed of up to 2,600MHz / 18GBps. However, cutting the memory bus in half relative to the 8GB model also halves overall memory bandwidth. According to reporting from Uniko’s Hardware on Twitter, this gives the hardware approximately one-quarter of the power of the top-end card, matching its 16 compute units, 16 RT cores, 64 texture units, and 1,024 stream processors.
Availability Restrictions for the System-Only Variant
Shoppers will not see that 4GB card on store shelves or in GPU-only online listings. When asked to clarify the discrepancy between official specifications and partner product pages, an AMD representative confirmed that the 4GB variant of the card is a system-only variant, not intended to be sold out of the pre-built system.
This restriction means the hardware will appear exclusively inside pre-built (presumably budget) gaming desktop PCs rather than as an individual component purchase. Meanwhile, the standalone 8GB RX 9050 card is set at a $279 USD introductory price. For its initial release, AMD will only make the 8GB model available in Latin American and APJ (Asia-Pacific and Japan) markets, with plans for releases in other markets left unshared.
Performance Demands and Modern Gaming Realities
While the hardware architecture should be enough to enable new features like FSR 4, a 4GB frame buffer falls far below the suggested requirements of current AAA titles like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced and Halo: Campaign Evolved, even if you’re willing to run at 1080p and aren’t worried about future proofing.
Pricing for systems housing these components is already materializing in retail channels. Tom’s Hardware spotted it in a Best Buy listing for an $889 prebuilt gaming PC that also includes an AMD Ryzen 5 5500 CPU, 500GB of SSD storage, and 8GB of DDR4 RAM.
Historical Context Within AMD Desktop Releases
This hardware release marks AMD’s first desktop card release in almost a full year. The industry last saw a 4GB desktop card from AMD back in 2022 with the RDNA2-based Radeon RX 6400, a year that also saw Nvidia release the GTX 1630 (not even getting the current RTX designation) and Intel release its Arc 3 A370M.

By comparison, baseline hardware for most PC gamers buying new hardware has centered around 8GB of VRAM—the baseline that had gamers arguing about whether 8GB was enough in 2025 before all this “AI” memory nonsense. With the RX 9050 series, it is hard to see the release of this card, at this time, as anything but a big step backwards even if it’s limited to pre-built systems at the moment.
