AMD’s next generation revealed: Radeon RX 7900 XTX

by time news

AMD has revealed the pair of Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 7900 XT GPU graphics cards, which will compete against Nvidia’s new RTX 4080 and RTX 4090. They are the first based on AMD’s RDNA 3 architecture, which according to the company will provide up to 54% more performance per watt.

But beyond the performance, it is a different architecture that incorporates a dedicated and separate chipset and is the first of its kind in the world of graphics cards. Thus they combine two main components, one for the graphics known as Graphics Compute Die (or GCD) manufactured at 5 nanometers and the other Memory Cache Die (or MCD) manufactured at 6 nanometers. Thus, by decoupling the clock speed of the graphics processor from the memory, they will offer better efficiency and resource utilization, which will be expressed in a significant improvement in performance and more efficient heat dissipation.

Technologically, the Radeon RX 7000 cards have improved hardware acceleration for ray tracing and artificial intelligence (AI), up to 96 CU cores at a clock speed of 2.3 GHz and 24 GB of 384-bit GDDR6 memory. Both cards have the new DisplayPort 2.1 connection that provides 54 Gbps traffic, AVC/HEVC and 8K60 AV1 encoders and the power consumption is 355 watts for the RX 7900 XTX or 300 watts for the RX 7900 XT.

AMD claims a significant improvement in the performance of the RX 7900 XTX: up to 1.7 times in performance and 1.6 times in ray tracing in 4K compared to the 6950 XT. In practice, it claims that both cards are intended for games in 4K, while XTX will also support games in 8K, this in preparation for the next generation of computer monitors that will be launched next year.

Prices are similar to Nvidia’s and start at $899 for the Radeon RX 7900 XT and $999 for the RX 7900 XTX. Launching in stores on December 13th.
