“No State that is not a member of the UN may sit on an international body of a cultural, sporting or other nature,” he told MAP, in reaction to the amendment of this article, during the 43rd ordinary and elective general assembly of CAF, held Friday in Rabat.

Article 4 of the CAF statutes stipulated that the Confederation is open to all applications from African national associations as official representatives managing football in their respective countries.

According to the amendment presented by the president of the FRMF, Fouzi Lekjaa, only representatives of independent countries and members of the UN are admitted to the CAF.

“This proposal, which has been in the works for a long time, has already been discussed for 3 or 4 years. We have always believed that the amendment of this article is possible. And now it has been approved at the 43rd CAF general assembly,” said Mr. El Hajoui.

Regarding the election of the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, to the FIFA Council, Mr. El Hajoui stressed that this election is the consecration of the services rendered by Mr. Lekjaa for the benefit of Moroccan football.

“Mr. Lekjaa’s main concern is the development of national football and its organization. We started by occupying positions of responsibility at CAF and today we are members of the FIFA council. This election is a source of pride for all Moroccans and national sports leaders, because it is the first time that a Moroccan occupies this position,” he said.

Mr. Lekjaa, “a man full of experience, will help bring Morocco’s voice to FIFA,” he added.

Mr Fouzi Lekjaa was elected as a member of the FIFA Council, in the Arabic, Portuguese and Spanish language group, alongside Egyptian Hany Abo Rida, who was seeking a second term.

Mr Lekjaa’s election is the first of its kind from Morocco to this world sporting body.

Mr. Lekjaa, second vice-president of CAF, also holds several positions within the bodies and committees of world and continental football. He is chairman of the CAF Finance Committee and vice-chairman of the committee for the organization of inter-club competitions and the management of the club licensing system within this Confederation, in addition to sitting on the FIFA Governance Committee.

Algerian FA President Khreireddine Zetchi, who was also in the running for a position on the FIFA Council, withdrew from the race just before the elections.
