The postponed Americas Pre-Olympic Baseball Tournament will be in the first days of June, according to baseball sources. The host country is still unknown. Cuba had been among the alternatives to organize it in April due to the low number of Covid-19 infections. The Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA) made the announcement after receiving official notice from the World Baseball/Softball Confederation (WBSC).
According to the CNA news agency, the sixth and final ticket for the Tokyo Olympic tournament will be played starting June 16 in the city of Taichung, in central Taiwan, where Taipei will compete with five other teams. The event to be held from June 16 to 20 at Douliu Stadiums in Taichung and Yunlin County will feature Taipei, Australia, China, the Netherlands and the second and third place winners of the Americas tournament, which is scheduled to be held in early June, according to the CTBA. The winner of the Americas tournament will be the fifth Olympic qualifier while the winner of the Taiwan competition will advance with the sixth ticket to Tokyo where baseball will make its Olympic reappearance.
Japan, Israel, Mexico and South Korea have already qualified for the postponed Olympic Games, which continue to be marked by uncertainty with the strong waves of the pandemic that the world is suffering at the beginning of 2021, despite the beginning of the application of the vaccines.
The Americas qualifiers (in Arizona) and Taiwan were originally scheduled to take place in March 2020 before they have now been postponed until June due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To date, the same groups that would compete in Arizona remain: A: USA, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Nicaragua. B: Cuba, Venezuela, Canada and Colombia.
