New Delhi: The construction work of Tata’s semiconductor unit in Assam started today with a big ceremony. State Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Limited Chairman N Chandrasekaran were present on this occasion. Union Minister of Railways, Electronics and Information Technology and Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnav told the media that the Prime Minister has always been emphasizing on the ‘Act East’ policy. Today, an important achievement has been achieved with the start of construction work of this unit in Assam. He informed that this project was approved by the Union Cabinet on February 29, 2024. A program with a total outlay of Rs 76,000 crore was notified on December 21, 2021 for the development of semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India. In June 2023, the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved Micron’s proposal to set up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat. Its construction work is going on at a fast pace.
There will be an investment of Rs 27 thousand crores
The Union Minister said that Tata’s semiconductor unit will be set up with an investment of Rs 27 thousand crore. It is expected to generate 15 thousand direct and 11-13 thousand indirect jobs. Highlighting the importance of the semiconductor industry, he said that it is a basic industry. This will create employment opportunities in various upstream and downstream industries.
The proposed capacity of this unit is to manufacture 4.83 crore semiconductor chips per day. He also informed that this unit will be a center for the development of indigenous advanced semiconductor packaging technologies. This includes wire bond, flip chip and i-SiP (Integrated System in Package) technologies. These three major technologies will be deployed in this plant. They are being developed in India itself. These technologies are extremely important for major applications like automotive (especially electric vehicles), communications, network infrastructure and others.
The Union Minister also informed that 85,000 industry-ready workforce is being trained at B.Tech, M.Tech and PhD levels in semiconductor chip design in 113 academic institutions across the country. Out of these, 9 are in the Northeast, details of which are given below:
