American actress Shannen Doherty, famous for her role in the TV series “Beverly Hills”, died at the age of 53, after a long struggle with breast cancer, People magazine reported on Sunday.
Doherty’s public information officer, Leslie Sloan, said in a statement, “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm that Shannen Doherty passed away on Saturday, after losing her battle with cancer, which she fought for many years.”
“Daugherty was surrounded by her family, daughter, sister, aunt and loyal friend, as well as her dog Bowie,” she said.
According to Variety magazine, Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, and was in remission in 2017. But she got cancer again in 2019 before it spread throughout her body.
Doherty’s star rose to prominence in the 1990s as teenager Brenda Walsh, who came with her brother Dylan, played by Jason Priestley, to Los Angeles from Minnesota.
The series “Beverly Hills: 90210” was a great success, because the audience especially appreciated the competition between Brenda and Kelly – played by Jennie Garth – over her lover, Dylan.
Dylan was played by Luke Perry, who died in 2019.
The series is a cultural phenomenon that raises sensitive issues such as racism, drug use and teenage sex.
Doherty left the series after the fourth season amid reports of tension that led her to quit the role, but she revisited the character to bring the series back in 2008 and 2019.
