Yes, humans are strange creatures: always looking for something different, always hunting for the next thrill. Also the American Brian Grubb wanted more.

After the extreme athlete was active as a wakeboarder in Florida at a young age, he later switched to the riskier wakeskating – a sport in which the athletes stand freely on the board without foot restraints. Grubb has already set two world records in this discipline.

The now 43-year-old recently set another world record on the roof of a skyscraper in Dubai. This time Grubb went a whole step further and tried out a new technique: He first surfed through a huge rooftop pool with a wakeboard pulled by a drone and then jumped over a ramp into the depths, where his parachute later opened. The location of the risky event was the Address Beach Resort on the beach in Dubai. At almost 300 meters above sea level, the hotel is considered the hotel with the highest infinity pool in the world.

Grubb told the Berliner Zeitung: “Many things I do are considered dangerous. But this is actually the most dangerous feat I have ever done.” And further: “We combined two sports that had never been done together before and also used a drone.” The extreme athlete sponsored by Red Bull calls it WakeBASE, a combination of wakeboarding and base jumping. By the way, he was supported with equipment and clothing by Prada Linea Rossa, the Milan fashion brand’s sports collection. Grubb is the second Red Bull athlete to receive this honor after kayaker Aniol Serrasolses.

What made preparing the record jump particularly difficult was that Grubb did not have the opportunity to practice the action on the spot beforehand. In addition to the sporting technology, the situation was also new: “On the day of the jump in Dubai, we had to wait over two hours for the right wind conditions. It’s a calculated risk to pull off a stunt like that. But it’s never completely certain,” says the athlete.

But Grubb still had to prepare; For the daring adventure, he practiced with Miles Daisher, a well-known base professional, at his facility in Idaho and in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, where there is a dangerous gorge popular with base athletes. Grubb says about the training period: “Mentally, this project was very demanding, but my training plan prepared me for every moment. I have been training with Miles Daisher for base jumps all year to prepare for anything that happens during the jump.”

When asked what’s next, Brian Grubb replies: “This was a big deal for me and the whole team, but we always have new ideas that we’re working on. The drone opens up many possibilities for new environments. I don’t want to give too much away, but we have some ideas for drone tows in the ocean that are going to be pretty exciting!” We’re excited, but take care, dear Brian Grubb.
