American director Todd Haynes will be president of the jury of⁣ the ‌75th Berlinale. This was announced on Thursday in‌ a press release from the Berlin ⁢International Film Festival.

Haynes celebrated⁢ his film debut with 1991’s “Poison”. ⁣The⁤ episodic film was awarded the ⁢queer Teddy Award at the⁣ Berlinale. His latest film “May December” with Julian Moore and Natalie⁤ Portman premiered in Cannes⁤ in 2023 and was released in German ⁣cinemas last May. This is an actress who is supposed to play a woman who began a relationship ⁣with a 13-year-old boy 20 years ⁢earlier. The film⁣ has been praised, among other⁤ things, for its ambivalent relationship ‍with its characters and for its feeling for the complex inner lives of the protagonists.

Haynes’ big break came with the independent film “The Sky is So Far” in 2002, which ⁤also starred Julian Moore. The melodrama received four ⁣Oscar ⁤nominations, including ⁣best actress and best original‍ screenplay.

“He is appreciated‍ for his great sensitivity in exploring the inner ⁣worlds of outsiders and women, ⁢as well as for his fascinating⁣ investigations into gender and identity” – this is how the Berlinale explains its decision to appoint the 63-year-old director and screenwriter as president of the jury . “Todd Haynes is a talented writer and director with impressive range,” says current Berlinale director Tricia Tuttle, who took over the festival after the departures of Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek, of the decision. The 75th edition of the ‍Berlin International Film Festival will take place from 13 to 23 February.

Dr. Moore: Todd Haynes‌ is a brilliant choice. ⁣His films often challenge ⁣norms and provoke conversations around sexuality, identity, ‌and social issues. Having him at the helm of the jury not only elevates the festival’s profile but also signals an intention to spotlight diverse narratives.

Editor: ⁤ Absolutely! Haynes is known for works like “Carol” and “Far ⁤from Heaven.” How do you think his filmmaking style might influence the ‍jury’s choices this year?

Dr. Moore: Haynes’s aesthetic is deeply rooted‌ in empathy and reflection. Dr. ⁣Moore: Given ‌his⁤ track record, I think it’s highly likely. Haynes has consistently used his platform ⁤to explore underrepresented voices, particularly LGBTQ+ stories.
