American Electric Power Plans to Invest $4 Billion in Fuel Cell Project for Google

American Electric Power plans to invest approximately $4 billion in a 702-megawatt fuel cell generation facility near Cheyenne, Wyoming. The installation will supply power to Google under a 20-year power purchase agreement, with construction slated to begin in 2026 and commercial operations targeting completion by the end of 2028.

Cheyenne Fuel Cell LLC will spearhead the project to supply electricity to Google in Laramie County as the utility expands beyond traditional service boundaries. Corporate filings show that American Electric Power holds approximately 92% ownership and control of the project entity.

Ownership And Financial Structure In Laramie County

Funds advised by Basalt Infrastructure Partners LLP hold the remaining interest of nearly 8%, as disclosed by the company during the announcement. The arrangement follows earlier procurement steps by AEP, including an agreement to secure fuel cell equipment from Bloom Energy.

AEP chairman, president, and CEO Bill Fehrman emphasized that the undertaking addresses immediate infrastructure needs for hyperscale customers alongside the newly announced $4 billion construction figure.

“As power demand continues to grow, AEP is bringing together new technologies and strong partnerships to deliver reliable, innovative energy solutions quickly and at scale,”

Fehrman added that the project demonstrates how the utility creates new opportunities to meet evolving energy requirements both within and outside its traditional service territory, noting that AEP operates an extensive transmission network through nearly 18,000 employees serving millions of customers across eleven states.

Carbon Capture Integration At The Cheyenne Facility

Unlike conventional generation plants, these systems generate electricity rather than the combustion of natural gas, yielding lower emissions. The Cheyenne facility will rely on fuel cell technology developed by Bloom Energy Corporation, and the installation includes specific plans to integrate carbon capture technology to achieve near-zero-emissions power generation.

Google is concurrently developing a campus on a 716-acre parcel located eight miles south of Cheyenne in the Switchgrass Industrial Park, a project that emerged in July.

Energy Planning And Regional Development In Wyoming

Separate regional energy developments include agreements between Google and Black Hills Corp. that took effect on September 30. The AEP project is not the only major generation development associated with Google’s planned Cheyenne data center.

The capital expenditure forms a core component of AEP’s $78 billion plan to invest from 2026 through 2030 to upgrade transmission networks and accommodate large-load customers across its 11-state footprint.
