American Gymnastics Legend Mary Lou Retton Fighting for Her Life as Fundraiser Surpasses Goal

American gymnastics legend Mary Lou Retton is currently battling a “very rare form of pneumonia” in the ICU, according to an update from her daughter, McKenna Kelley. The Olympic gold-winning medalist has been receiving incredible medical care as she fights for her life.

Kelley took to Instagram to express her gratitude for the outpouring of love and support for her mother. She also requested continued prayers and positive thoughts for Retton’s recovery. The gymnastics icon’s four daughters, Skyla, Shayla, Emma, and McKenna, are hopeful for their mother’s improvement and appreciate the efforts of the doctors and nurses providing her care.

To help with the mounting medical expenses, Kelley started a fundraiser on Spotfund, as Retton is currently uninsured. The campaign has far exceeded its initial goal, with nearly $300,000 raised as of Wednesday evening. The generous contribution of $50,000 from Linda McIngvale, wife of Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale, stands out as the largest donation so far.

Retton, who won the individual all-around gold medal at the 1984 Olympics, became the first American woman to achieve this feat. She retired in 1986 and has since been focused on health, fitness, and raising her four daughters.

The news of Retton’s health struggle has garnered attention and support from fans and well-wishers worldwide. Her determination and resilience continue to inspire those who admire her achievements in the world of gymnastics.
