American Politician Arrested in Hong Kong for Carrying Firearm Without License

An American politician, Washington state senator Jeff Wilson, has been arrested at Hong Kong International Airport for carrying a gun into the city without a license. The charge sheet states that Wilson was charged with possession of a firearm without a license, which carries a punishment of up to 14 years in prison and a fine exceeding $12,000. Wilson appeared in court on Monday and was granted bail.

Wilson has claimed that the incident was an “honest mistake”. According to a statement posted on his website, he and his wife were traveling for a five-week vacation to Southeast Asia when he unknowingly packed his pistol in his briefcase. Wilson stated, “It was an honest mistake. And I expect the situation to be resolved shortly.”

The senator further explained that he discovered the weapon mid-flight between San Francisco and Hong Kong. He claimed that he did not realize his pistol was in his briefcase when he passed through airport security in Portland, and baggage screeners failed to note it. Upon landing in Hong Kong, Wilson immediately alerted customs officials to the issue.

The case has attracted attention from various parties, including Portland International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, the Transportation Security Administration, and the US Consulate in Hong Kong. However, no comments have been made thus far.

Hong Kong’s Customs and Excise Department refused to comment on the matter, citing ongoing legal proceedings. Wilson’s next court hearing is scheduled for October 30.

Hong Kong has strict gun control laws, with possession of arms or ammunition prohibited unless individuals possess a license from the Commissioner of Police. Licenses are usually only granted to police officers, armed security guards, and operators of exclusive shooting range clubs.

In contrast to the United States, where gun violence is a significant issue and firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens, gun violence is incredibly rare in Hong Kong.

Wilson’s home state, Washington, allows for open carry of both long guns and handguns without a license, while concealed firearms require a permit. Wilson mentioned that his pistol was registered in Washington, and he holds a concealed pistol license.

The outcome of Wilson’s case in Hong Kong remains uncertain, but he remains hopeful that the situation will be resolved soon.
