Jimmy Buffett, known for his 1977 song “Margaritaville” and his love of a good time, died September 1 at the age of 76. “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1, surrounded by his family, his friends, his music and his dogs,” said a press release published late Friday on the musician’s official website and on his social networks.

“He lived his life like a song until his last breath and will be missed by many,” the statement added. The cause of death has not been revealed by his relatives.

Born on Christmas Day 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Buffet rose to prominence in the late 1970s with his seventh album “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes” and his homage to drinking and relaxing on the beach. “Margaritaville,” Buffett’s only hit to chart in the Billboard Top 10, not only revitalized his music career but also spawned various other ventures over the years.

Apart from his musical career, rich with thirty albums, this artist was also a business genius. Jimmy Buffett was the owner of a chain of restaurants and hotels named Jimmy’s Buffett Margaritaville, a nod to his hit released in 1977. His real estate empire had allowed him to appear on the list of billionaires of the American magazine Forbes.

It was in many ways ‘Margaritaville’ that defined the artist’s career and which, along with ‘Come Monday’ and ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise’, was always one of the eight songs in his catalog that he included in all his concerts. After being inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016, “Margaritaville” was selected this year by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the US National Recording Registry. As part of this process, the song was praised for its “cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance”.
