/ A US Air Force soldier set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC, (yesterday afternoon, Sunday), repeatedly chanting “Free Palestine”, and was transferred to the hospital for treatment and is in critical condition.
CBS News reported that the video of the incident was broadcast live on Twitch, and the man identified himself as an active member of the US Air Force.
The Air Force later confirmed the pilot’s active duty participation, but did not identify him.
For its part, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said on Sunday evening that “a person set himself on fire in front of the Tel Aviv embassy in Washington.” It reported that “there were no injuries among the Israeli embassy staff.”
After setting himself on fire, he repeatedly shouted “Free Palestine.” US authorities said on Monday that the man was taken to a local hospital for treatment after members of the US Secret Service were able to put out the fire, according to the Washington Post.
Security forces, firefighters and Secret Service personnel arrived at the scene and dealt with the self-immolator. The area where the incident occurred was evacuated.
