The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said today that four drones were shot down that were targeting an American warship in the Red Sea and were launched from areas controlled by the Houthis in Yemen.
The ship was responding to distress calls from two cargo ships that were being attacked, namely a Norwegian cargo ship and a Gabonese cargo ship flying the Indian flag. The latter was hit by a drone.
The Norwegian freighter was transporting vegetable oil from Europe to India and continued its journey.
A Houthi spokesman said the American ship was attacking a Yemeni reconnaissance plane in the area and added that a missile from the American ship had exploded near the Gabonese cargo ship.
The spokesman threatened to turn the Red Sea into a “fiery arena if the United States and its allies continue their intimidation”
The American military command said that two anti-ship missiles were also fired by the Houthis but did not hit any target.
