Indian police are searching for the husband of US citizen Lalita Kaya Kumar, who was found chained to a tree in the jungles of Maharashtra state.

According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, law enforcement officials believe that the American woman’s husband may be involved in this incident, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“The woman is not yet in a condition to give evidence. She is weak, as she has not eaten anything for several days,” the publication quotes a local government representative as saying.

The woman was found by a shepherd in Sindhudurg district on Saturday evening. The US national was found chained by her leg to a tree in the jungle near a remote village about 450 km from Mumbai. The shepherd heard her cries for help and alerted authorities. Officials found several documents on the woman, including a photocopy of her US passport and Indian documents showing an address in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Preliminary investigations show that Kumar, 50, has been living in India for the past 10 years. Police have been sent to Tamil Nadu to trace her relatives and gather more information.

Kumar was taken to a local hospital but due to her grave mental and physical condition, she was shifted to Goa Medical College for further treatment. “She is out of danger now. The doctors who treated her said she was suffering from mental issues,” a local official told reporters. Police suspect that her husband may have chained her in the forest after an argument.

According to local media, she could have spent about 40 days chained in the jungle.
