In Lincoln, Nebraska, a woman named Dawn Thompson is accused of stealing more than $27,000 worth of gasoline by exploiting a software bug at a Pump and Pantry gas station. Police officials allege Thompson improperly used her rewards card more than 500 times over a six-month period.

USA Today writes about this.

According to WILX-TV, Bosselman Division’s upgrade program, which owns the Pump and Pantry store, allowed customers to switch their gas pump to demo mode after swiping their rewards card twice, allowing them to fill up for free. Lincoln police discovered that Thompson took advantage of the glitch more than 500 times, receiving nearly 7,000 gallons of free gas.

Police noticed Thompson acting suspiciously on CCTV and detained her at the scene. During the interrogation, the woman said that her man, who was paying off his car debt, gave her a bonus card instead of money. However, the man died and the police were unable to contact him.

Police officials say Thompson received more than $27,000 in “free gas” from November 2022 to June 2023. She is currently charged with theft and has her bond set at $7,500.
