America’s new plan to remove space debris within 5 years!

by time news
On Thursday, the United States’ Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted and passed new rules to address the threat posed by spacecraft debris, or orbital debris, also known as space junk.

It also includes reducing the time it takes to remove inactive satellites that are in the way of active spacecraft in Earth orbit.

By removing inactive satellites, collisions with orbiting satellites will be reduced. Accidents will be prevented and efficiency will be improved, FCC Chairman Jessica Rosenworcel said.

And the US agency has changed from 25 years to 5 years the short deadline for decommissioning low-Earth orbit satellites that US operators had previously been given.

The agency noted that about 10,000 satellites have been launched since 1957, and more than half of them are now defunct. “Defunct satellites, discarded rocket cores and other debris now fill the space environment,” the FCC said. More than 4,800 satellites have been detected in orbit by the end of 2021. Most of them are commercial.

The orbiting space debris becomes like a blanket in the lower atmosphere known as ‘Lower Earth Orbit’. It is only by excluding this that subsequent missiles can be launched.

If this debris persists, it will become an area prone to accidents and disabling other operating satellites. No investor would come forward to send the missiles. The economy will also suffer. Therefore, the US has decided to remove this soon.
