Amit Shah has urged Rahul Gandhi to understand what his grandmother, Indira Gandhi, said about Savarkar, while the senior Congress leader has been criticizing him. A letter from Indira Gandhi to Pandit Pakle dated 20th May 1980 reads, “Veera Savarkar’s brave resistance against the British Government occupies an important place in the history of our freedom struggle. I wish success in the plans to celebrate the birthday of the son India remembers (Savarkar).” Indira Gandhi even issued a commemorative stamp for Savarkar in 1966 and donated Rs. 11,000 for a documentary produced by the central government in his honour.
