Medical researchers have released the final overall survival analysis from the landmark PAPILLON phase III clinical trial, offering new data for patients with a difficult-to-treat and rare form of lung cancer. The findings were presented by Chul Kim of Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center as part of a Presidential plenary at the 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer in Seoul, South Korea.
Historically, median overall survival for this patient population hovered between 1.5 and 2 years. The final trial data push that figure significantly higher. Amivantamab plus chemotherapy extended overall survival to 34.3 months, nearly three years, compared to 27.9 months for chemotherapy alone.

The trial focused specifically on non-small cell lung cancers carrying an uncommon genetic alteration known as an EGFR exon 20 insertion mutation. While the progression-free survival benefit was clear—cutting the risk of disease progression by 60 percent with an 11.4-month duration compared to 6.7 months for control groups—the final overall survival analysis did not reach formal statistical significance.
Researchers attributed this primarily to substantial crossover within the study design. Approximately three-quarters of eligible patients initially assigned exclusively to the control chemotherapy arm subsequently received amivantamab after their disease progressed. When adjusted for this crossover effect, the overall survival benefit becomes much more pronounced, reinforcing the combination as a foundational first-line therapy.
Broader Research Links Structured Exercise to Extended Cancer Survival
Away from targeted drug therapies, separate research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine highlights how lifestyle interventions impact cancer outcomes. A comprehensive review conducted by specialists in Taiwan examined 21 separate trials across Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America involving more than 8,400 individuals.
Patients who integrated structured physical activity regimens into standard medical care faced a 23 per cent lower risk of mortality and were 17 per cent less likely to experience a cancer recurrence before death. Furthermore, these individuals demonstrated a 26 per cent reduced risk of dying specifically from cancer.
Defining Safe Physical Activity Interventions for Recovery
Researchers noted that the positive association was most pronounced among individuals who achieved a minimum 70 per cent completion rate of their assigned programs. Programs combining aerobic routines alongside resistance exercises yielded positive results, whereas resistance training on its own showed no significant effect, likely due to distinct biological adaptations.
