President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador asked the Government of IsraelI will no longer protect Thomas Zeronthe alleged author of the “Historical Truth” of the Ayotzinapa case.

This Friday, from the Ignacio Zaragoza room at the National Palace (where he holds his daily security meetings), the Mexican president once again reproached Tel Aviv for allegedly protecting Zerón de Lucio, former head of the defunct Criminal Investigation Agency (AIC).

And while the president had already accused the Israeli administration of supporting the former Mexican official (April 4), he now asked it to stop doing so and explain the alleged support of arms distributors:

“He is involved in acts of torture, and no country, no government, can provide protection to torturers. Israel cannot, the Government of Israel cannot, should not, keep Zerón under any protection, because it is said that he is protected and that (…) should be clarified by the Government of Israel, because he was linked to suppliers of weapons and equipment.”

In his morning press conference on April 4, López Obrador lashed out, twice, against the Government of Israel and the Judiciary, against the former because:

“We care a lot about Zerón’s extradition, because there has been no progress, it is clear that there is protection (…) from the Government of Israel.”

That day, López Obrador raised his reproaches to the Israeli administration twice by criticizing its government and the judiciary, accusing the latter of not yet issuing a ruling on the extradition request against the former head of the Criminal Investigation Agency: “I have sent two letters to two (prime) ministers, the current one and the previous one, and there has been no response. They told us that there would be a ruling in December and there has not been one.”

In October, López Obrador accused several authorities of having agreed to have Enrique Peña Nieto’s former official flee to the Middle East:

“Among all of them – who are you referring to? – Oh, no! We are investigating, but there was certainly protection, like the way for the Prosecutor, for the Attorney General – Murillo Karam – and what I am telling you is very serious.”

Tomás Zerón de Lucio, former head of the AIC, is one of the main suspects in the creation of the so-called “Historical Truth” regarding the disappearance of the students from the Isidro Burgos Rural Normal School.

Zerón de Lucio was one of the main persons in charge of the investigation into the disappearance of the young people on the night of September 26-27, 9 years ago.

The López Obrador administration accuses him of being one of the officials of the time who participated in the fabrication of the version that the 43 young people were murdered and burned in the Cocula garbage dump, a story that would have been based on torture.

Once the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) began investigating him, Tomás Zerón fled from Mexico to Israel, via Canada.

The López Obrador government has tried to extradite him and has sent two letters asking that he be sent to Mexico, where he considers him “a torturer.”

The President’s statement that day came less than a week after the Israeli judiciary ruled in favor of the extradition of Andrés Roemer, which can be appealed in the remainder of this month by the former diplomat accused of alleged sexual abuse in Mexico.
