President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) recognized for the first time that a pile contaminated a cenote that is within Section 5 South of the Maya Trends.

This Thursday, when questioned about alleged ecological damage – he was shown a clip of the site located between Akumal and Tulum – in Section 5 South of the “Rolling Jaguar” by the international press, the Mexican president said that:

“This event had to do with an accident that we are remediating, which says, we already have a remediation solution for that site (…) concrete came loose, the entire site is already being cleaned, we are working to remedy the situation.”

Although he pointed out that the impact on section 5 South – which goes from Playa del Carmen to Tulum – “is a single case, and not like – according to his statement – ​​what some media and some civil associations, related to the “opposition bloc” manage. “They are magnifying it.”

At the same time, he accused – without mentioning it – the Vulcan company, current owner of the Calica mining exploitation, of financing those he considers “pseudo environmentalists” who are against the Mayan Train.

Since the beginning of 2024, activists and organizations have reported contamination of bodies of water in Section 5 of the Train. Despite this, López Obrador maintained the version that the drilling or the piles affect the environment.

On March 1, at the inauguration of the Section in question, the President said that the piles are covered in a special way to avoid contamination:

“They are lined so that the water is not contaminated with cement, with concrete; They have a special cover. Studies are being carried out so that low areas, rivers, and cenotes are not affected.
