AMLO’s government warns of various types of fraud and scams for stealing WhatsApp accounts
At this meeting, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection showed a new form of fraud and scam for him WhatsApp account theft.
The Secretary of Security has presented at least three types of fraud and scams that criminals can use to steal WhatsApp users’ accounts:
- Code scam: alleged delivery men request a confirmation code sent to the victim’s phone, claiming that it is necessary to deliver a package. But in reality, this code is a request from another person to install the number on the WhatsApp platform from a new phone
- Voicemail: This involves requesting an installation code by calling. This is done mainly at night, so that the account owner does not answer and the message is channeled to the voicemail. Therefore, the scammers access it, which is rarely protected with a password.
- Screen sharing: Supposed friends, family members or companies trick victims into setting up a video call, then use arguments to request that they share their phone screen so that the fraudsters can access the information they have on their devices.

Due to this new modus operandi of the extortionists, the AMLO Government issues a series of recommendations so that users’ WhatsApp accounts are not stolen, which are the following:
- Enable two-step verification
- Delete your voicemail or set a secure password for it
- Do not share any verification code unless it has been previously requested
- Do not activate the option to share screen with unknown numbers
- Be cautious with suspicious links and messages
