Various prison sentences in the case of the collapse of the Derna dams, ranging from 9 to 27 years with the payment of blood money, acquitting 4 defendants and obligating 3 others to return the money, according to what was announced by the Attorney General’s Office

The Attorney General’s Office announced the issuance of a ruling convicting 12 officials responsible for managing the dams facility in the case of the collapse of the Derna dams, including the former governor of the Benghazi Central District, Ali Al-Habri, in his capacity as head of the Derna and Benghazi Reconstruction Fund.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office said that the Criminal Court sentenced 7 of the accused to 9 years in prison and payment of the blood money.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the court sentenced the tenth defendant to 15 years in prison and to pay the blood money; the thirteenth defendant to 27 years in prison; and the fourteenth defendant to 26 years in prison and to pay the blood money.

The court also sentenced the fifteenth to 19 years in prison with payment of the blood money, and sentenced the sixteenth to 24 years in prison with payment of the blood money.

The court acquitted the fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth defendants, and ordered the tenth, thirteenth and fourteenth defendants to return the money obtained from illicit gains, according to the office.

On September 26, Attorney General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour announced the initiation of criminal proceedings against 16 officials as part of investigations he conducted into the collapse of the Wadi Derna dams. He pledged during that to prosecute those responsible and that the investigation would be impartial.

On December 28, the indictment chamber of the Derna Primary Court began the first session of the trial of the defendants responsible for the flood disaster that swept through the Green Mountain region, which led to the collapse of the two dams of Wadi Derna.

On January 11, the judge of the indictment chamber of the Derna Primary Court referred the case of the collapse of the two dams to the Court of Appeal, in accordance with the indictment issued by the Public Prosecutor, with the defendants remaining in detention.

Last May, the Derna Criminal Court decided to close the pleadings in the trial of 16 people responsible for the Derna tragedy, and explained that it had completed the investigation of the facts of the case in accordance with the rules of trial management; and decided to postpone the pronouncement of the verdict until the session of July 28.
