Amorim Transfer: Deal Hinges on Key Demand

Manchester United Face U-Turn Demand to Land Wolves Midfielder Joao Gomes

Manchester United’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements may hinge on Wolves reversing a recent pledge to manager Rob Edwards, as the Red Devils target Brazilian midfielder Joao Gomes. The club is actively planning for the 2026 transfer windows, with scouts identifying potential signings to bolster the squad under the leadership of manager Ruben Amorim and achieve a top-four finish in the Premier League.

The search for midfield talent comes after Manchester United reportedly cooled interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba due to the Seagulls’ high valuation. Other options, including Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson, remain on the radar, but it’s Gomes who has recently emerged as a key target. A transfer insider, Dean Jones, first reported the growing interest at Old Trafford, a claim subsequently corroborated by numerous outlets.

Tottenham Hotspur also shares an interest in Gomes, with the 24-year-old reportedly open to a move should Wolves face relegation this season. However, prising him away from Molineux mid-season will be a significant challenge, given his importance to the team and their current precarious position.

According to a report from United in Focus, the difficulty extends beyond a transfer fee. Manchester United will need to persuade the Wolves board to sell, but crucially, they must also convince them to break a promise made just last week to new manager Edwards. This promise stipulated that no player would be sold in January, as Edwards aims to steer the club clear of relegation.

Gomes arrived at Wolves in January 2023 for a fee of €18.7m (£15m, $21m) from Flamengo and has quickly become a pivotal figure, making 98 appearances and scoring seven goals. His statistical profile, assessed by FBRef over a 12-month period, suggests he’s well-suited to Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation.

The midfielder excels in defensive metrics, ranking in the 96th percentile for tackles made per 90 minutes (3.37). He also performs strongly in blocks (67th percentile), successful take-ons (79th percentile), progressive carries (71st percentile), and progressive passes (72nd percentile). A pass completion accuracy of 85.7% demonstrates his reliability in possession.

Many observers already see Gomes as a potential long-term replacement for Casemiro, and a move would address a clear need in Manchester United’s squad, provided the price is right. However, Wolves’ relegation battle complicates matters, potentially delaying any deal.

Gomes has attracted interest from top clubs before, with Liverpool previously pursuing him. When questioned about the speculation in 2022, he made his ambitions clear, stating, “Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream in football.”

This desire for Champions League football could be a key factor in convincing Gomes to move to Old Trafford. A transfer appears increasingly likely regardless of Wolves’ survival chances next season, but satisfying his ambition will be crucial.

Elsewhere, Manchester United are also monitoring other midfield options. Reports indicate interest in a LaLiga midfielder available for a €50m fee in the winter window. Speculation linking Kobbie Mainoo with a move to Leeds has been dismissed, with sources citing four key reasons why a transfer won’t materialize. Furthermore, the club is among 11 teams interested in a promising defensive midfield prospect from Hertha Berlin, considered one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
