The leaders of South Korea and the Netherlands declared a “ alliance of chips » between the two countries and set up a dialogue around semiconductors. This reinforced cooperation should make it possible to guarantee the supply chains of this sensitive material which is essential to the functioning of our electronic products. Three agreements were signed during the South Korean president’s trip to the Netherlands which ends this Thursday, December 14.

This is a significant rapprochement between two key players, at a time when tensions are growing around semiconductors. For the first time, a foreign head of state was invited to the clean room where the Dutch manufacturer ASML prepares its coveted latest generation equipment. An honor for President Yoon Suk-yeol, who above all demonstrates that the company has become essential. ASML is the world’s only supplier of extreme ultraviolet lithography equipment, enabling chips from seven nanometers to be manufactured. This know-how appears both valuable in the race for miniaturization, but also vital for manufacturing cutting-edge semiconductors.

More than 700 million euros of investment

In the presence of the two heads of state, Seoul and Amsterdam signed a series of memorandums of understanding: the creation of a joint academy, a partnership for hydrogen recycling, but above all, an investment of more than 700 million euros in a joint research and development center between ASML and Samsung Electronics. This should make it possible to design technologies for the most advanced chips in partnership. Thanks to these agreements, South Korea seeks to strengthen its companies, leaders in the field of memory chips. But the country is still far behind the Taiwanese TSMC and the latest generation chips.
