“The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Ihor Klymenko, has just informed me about the arrest of a suspect in the murder of Irina Farion in Dnipro,” he posted on his Telegram channel.

According to him, the operation to arrest the suspect was very difficult.

“These days, hundreds of specialists from the National Police of Ukraine, SBU (Security Service of Ukraine) and other services worked to solve the murder. I am grateful to everyone who added new facts to the picture of the crime every day and brought the truth closer,” said the President of Ukraine.

He added that an 18-year-old boy was arrested in the city of Dnipro.

“Necessary investigative actions and expertise are being carried out. I instructed the Minister of the Interior to present all the details to the public,” he noted.

A complex operation

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine I. Klymenko announced that there is enough evidence to state that it was the detainee who shot the linguist.

“A huge team of detectives, investigators, criminal analysts, experts, other police services and employees of the Security Service of Ukraine worked continuously for 139 hours. They checked every nook and cranny along the shooter’s escape route and scouted around 100 hectares of forest. The suspect was eventually tracked down. His identity was established. With his photo, it was only a matter of time: smart surveillance cameras captured him everywhere,” the RBC-Ukraine news portal quotes him as saying.

I. Klymenko reported that identifying the criminal and arresting him was a careful process that required great professionalism, endurance and discipline so that not a single mistake was made.

“About the accused: resident of Dnipro, 18 years old. In preparation for the crime, he rented at least three apartments in Lviv. He is now in police custody,” he said.

I. Klymenko added that the investigation is now leaning towards the idea that the shooter is the sole perpetrator of the crime.

I. Assassination of Farion

July 19 around 7:30 p.m. in the evening in Lviv, an unknown person shot the linguist I.Farion when she was waiting for a taxi outside her house. A bullet hit her in the head. I. Farion was hospitalized in critical condition, underwent surgery and was transferred to the intensive care unit, where she fell into a deep coma and was connected to artificial lung ventilation. Doctors were unable to save her, and the 60-year-old woman was later pronounced dead.

Law enforcement officials launched a special operation to arrest the shooter. A criminal case was opened under Article 115 of the Criminal Code (intentional murder). Police are considering several versions of the motive for the murder, including socio-political activities and personal enmity, as well as a possible connection with Russia.

The night before the murder, the killer was caught on surveillance cameras. He had an unusual gait and wore brightly colored clothes.

The President of Ukraine, V. Zelensky, said that the arrest of the attacker was personally supervised by the Minister of the Interior, I. Klymenko, and the head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vasylis Maliuks.

I. Fariona was buried on July 22. Lychakiv cemetery in Lviv. Thousands of people came to say goodbye to the woman.
