Saturday January 27, an 8-year-old boy died following an accident in the Grand-Bornand ski area, in Haute-Savoie. According to the Annecy public prosecutor’s office, “the child, who was wearing a helmet, was skiing on a blue slope with his father.” Deputy prosecutor Benoît Defournel explains that “he had a fall and [qu’] he deviated onto the black Lachat slope, which was closed to the public.

The child would have rolled down the icy track for around a hundred meters. After the fall, rescuers took care of the child. Transported to Grenoble University Hospital by helicopter, he did not survive his injuries.

Even if the accidental theory seems to be confirmed, an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accident. The young victim had little experience of skiing.

The young boy spent the day at the Grand-Bornand station with his father and his little brother.

Mountain rescue teams are calling for caution, because “mountain conditions are particularly delicate” with “tiled” snow in some places.
