At the opening, the director of the State Ensemble “Gaya”, Doctor of Philosophy in art history Turan Mamedalieva spoke about the project, which was conceived by the legendary soloist of the group, and later the leader, People’s Artist Rauf Babayev. Work has been going on since 2017 together with members of the current youth ensemble “Gaya” in the direction of creating solo, choral and duet numbers of a musical comedy. The harmonization and arrangement of the numbers in a jazz-pop style belongs to Rauf Babayev, and the instrumental arrangement belongs to a member of the State Ensemble “Gaya”, composer, pianist Nazim Akhmedov. Unfortunately, Rauf Babayev died in 2020.
Let us remember that “Gaya” came to the big stage in 1961, when Rauf Hajiyev invited musicians to work in the Azerbaijan State Variety Orchestra. The vocal quartet, consisting of the leader of the ensemble Teymur Mirzoev, Arif Gadzhiev, Lev Elisavetsky and Rauf Babayev, performed in the 1960-80s and performed songs in Azerbaijani, Spanish, Polish, Russian and English. The team successfully toured in many countries. Such composers as Tofig Guliyev, Fikret Amirov, Rauf Hajiyev, Vasif Adigozalov, Faraj Karaev and Tofig Babayev worked with “Gaya”. In 1985, a jazz orchestra was created under “Gaya” and “Gaya” received the name of the pop-symphonic state song ensemble. In 2009, the group under the direction of People’s Artist Rauf Babayev received the official status of the State Jazz Ensemble “Gaya”. Then the group performed under the direction of Honored Artist Rufat Babayev. Since September 2023, the ensemble has been headed by Turan Mamedalieva.
In the concert program, the audience could enjoy compositions from the musical comedy of the great Uzeir Hajibeyli “Arshin mal alan” in a new presentation and interpretations performed by a young group, as well as folk songs and hits of the past years by composers Tofiga Babaeva, Tofiga Guliyev, Raufa Hajieva, Vasifa Adygezalova and Ogtaya Almost. Soloists – Jahangir Perishani, Shole Safaralieva, Sabina Hadjieva, Nigar Jalilova, Gunai Akhmedova, Boris Bayramov. Instrumentalists – Rafael Bunyadov (electric guitar), Vagif Aliyev (drums), Farrukh Jafarov (electric piano), Farid Mailov, Farhad Jafarov (saxophone), Ogtay Rustamov (trumpet), Fuad Jafar (bass guitar).
