Last week, American skateboarder Nyjah Huston won bronze in street skateboarding at the Paris <a href="https://time.news/mariana-pajon-colombias-bmx-champion-faces-challenges-ahead-of-paris-2024-olympics/" title="Mariana Pajón: Colombia's BMX Champion Faces Challenges Ahead of Paris 2024 Olympics”>2024 Olympic Games and made a rather pointed Instagram post about the quality of his medal. As noted by the team on Friday, August 9th, the 29-year-old athlete expressed his dissatisfaction with the medal’s appearance and quality.
“These medals look awesome when they’re brand new,” he wrote. “But after carrying them around and wearing them out or having my friends wear them over the weekend, it turns out they’re not as comfortable as you might think.”
This sentiment was echoed by Edward White, a designer from the Sunday Times, who shared pictures of the medal and expressed concerns about its durability. “Apparently the quality is not as good as you might think. […] If the back of the medal is badly damaged, the face is not protected from cutting either.”
So far, the quality of none of the 5,084 medals struck by the Paris Mint for the 2024 Olympics, which includes a piece of the Eiffel Tower, has been criticized.
