A 72-year-old American resident of Washington (United States) filed a complaint against the UW Medical Center-Northwest and two of its surgeons. Arriving at the hospital emergency room on December 6, 2022 due to severe abdominal pain, the patient learned that he was suffering from an attack of appendicitis requiring urgent intervention. But as reported by New York Postthe septuagenarian did not feel better the day after the operation, quite the contrary.
Nearly 20 kg lost
Two days later, after a follow-up scan, the doctors discovered the origin of his problems: they had not removed the appendix, but a piece of the lower part of his colon! A serious error which caused an infection, itself responsible for sepsis. The patient, who claims to have come close to death, underwent a new operation so that his inflamed appendix could finally be removed and his colon treated.
In total, the American had to undergo four additional operations and stay in hospital for 53 days. During this long battle, he lost almost 20 kg. He says today he still suffers from anxiety, memory loss and significant pain. “Someone must take responsibility and measures must be taken so that this type of error does not happen again,” declared the American, who hopes to obtain damages.
