An American tourist died in the Bahamas after being attacked by a shark

A 44-year-old American tourist was killed by a sharkin an attack recorded this Monday near Cable Beach, in New Providence, the main island of the Bahamas, where the capital Nassau is located.

The victim, from the city of Boston, I was rowing with a family member in the area near the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort.

A lifeguard from that tourist center came out to help her in a rescue boat and was able to remove both the woman and the man who was accompanying her from the water, the Police reported.

After taking them to a safe place, the woman underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuversbut had suffered serious injuries. “The victim suffered significant trauma to the right side of her body,” the statement said. She was pronounced dead by emergency services.

The Bahamas archipelago, with more than 3,000 islands, is home to a large number of hotel complexes and a good part of its economy depends on tourism.

Los Shark attacks there and elsewhere are unusualwith 89 of these incidents recorded worldwide by the International Shark Attack File, a database updated by the Florida Museum of Natural History, in the United States.

The Bahamas has recorded, since 1580, 33 attacks, according to the data in that archive.

In 2019, an American mother who was with her family also died in the Bahamas while snorkeling when she was attacked by a shark on an excursion.

Two weeks ago, a 47-year-old German tourist was also the victim of a shark attack while participating in a diving excursion off West End, on the island of Grand Bahama.
