an application from 2022 … and in 2023, here is what all parents need to know

by time news

The Parliament of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation is examining a reform project (fourth in 15 years) of the decree which governs enrollment in secondary 1. The committee vote is expected on Thursday, but the final vote (in plenary) will be in January.

The proposed reform maintains the initial ambitions of regulation, equity and transparency of enrollments, while making changes, in particular to better take into account the realities of the different school basins. Parents must always complete a single registration form (FUI) listing the schools of their choice for their child.

60% of schools

Good deal for parents who have to enroll their child in secondary in the coming weeks (for the start of the September 2022)? Yes, for some of them. This applies to around 60% of schools, those which are not complete … Even if, to avoid any confusion, what the new decree provides will concern parents who do not enroll their child in a school a year later. incomplete: at the beginning of the year 2023 (therefore for the start of the September 2023 school year).

Let’s explain it all calmly. It is at the beginning of 2022 that parents, whose children are currently in 6th primary, will have to enroll their children in secondary. The form submission period will run from February 14 to March 11. This form will be sent to the parents concerned in January 2022.

How can the new decree already affect them? We will facilitate the procedure for incomplete schools for three consecutive years. This therefore concerns schools which, for the past three years, have had more places to offer than children to welcome. Parents and children will therefore no longer have to wait weeks for confirmation of their registration as was the case. They will be directly and automatically registered. It is estimated that this concerns at least 60% of schools.

In addition, the new website will also be accessible to parents who must take this step in 2022.

Deadline too short

On the other hand, all the other novelties of the enrollment decree will come into force the following year, for the start of the September 2023 school year. Why can’t we go faster? We are told that it takes a hell of a job upstream to best inform parents. And there, it is too short as a deadline for a procedure which will begin in the coming weeks …
