New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed semiconductor industry experts at the Semicon India 2024 Summit. He said that the world can bet on India when challenges arise. The country will provide unprecedented semiconductor technology. Praising India’s development story, Modi called upon investors and stakeholders of the semiconductor industry to invest here. At this event organized in Greater Noida, Modi said that India is the 8th country in the world where this global semiconductor initiative is being started. This is the right time to be in India. The PM also informed that a semiconductor workforce of 85 thousand technicians, engineers and R & D experts is being prepared. Calling upon industry experts of emerging technology, Modi said that India is on the way to becoming a semiconductor powerhouse. India will work with the US to accelerate development in the semiconductor sector globally. The PM said, ‘You are well aware of the talent of Indian designers. India contributes 20% talent to the world of designing. It is growing continuously. We are building a semiconductor workforce of 85,000 technicians, engineers and R&D experts. India’s focus is to prepare its students and professionals for the semiconductor industry.’

Target to create 60 lakh jobs in the electronic sector

Citing the example of mobile exports, Modi said that India is the second largest exporter of 5G phones. He supported his point by saying that India’s electronic sector is now worth $150 billion. The PM said, ‘Our aim is to create 60 lakh jobs by making India’s electronic sector a $500 billion industry. This will also help the semiconductor industry.’

Prime Minister Modi said that technology and democracy should go hand in hand. He highlighted the need for both to work together to create a good semiconductor ecosystem in the world. Modi stressed that the combination of democracy and technology is important to advance human welfare. He underlined India’s commitment to play an important role in the global semiconductor sector.

Earlier on Wednesday, Modi chaired a meeting with experts from the semicon industry at his official residence in New Delhi. During the roundtable of semiconductor executives, Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested that democracy and technology should be combined together for the welfare of humanity. Modi discussed the important role of technology in shaping both business and India’s future. He emphasized that semiconductors, as the foundation of the digital age, will soon become essential for even the most basic needs.

What was said in one-on-one conversation with experts?

Modi outlined several key areas for growth. These include enhancing social, digital and physical infrastructure, promoting inclusive growth, reducing regulatory burdens, besides promoting investment in manufacturing and innovation. He said India is well positioned to become a reliable partner in the diverse semiconductor supply chain.

During his one-on-one interaction with experts from the semicon industry, Modi also highlighted the government’s goal of skill development for India’s talent pool to ensure a trained workforce is available for the industry. The meeting was attended by CEOs, heads and representatives from various organizations including SEMI, Micron, NXP, PSMC, IMEC, Renesas, TEPL, Tokyo Electron Ltd, Tower, Synopsys, Cadence, Rapidus, Jacobs, JSR, Infineon, Advantest, Teradyne, Applied Materials, Lam Research, Merck, CG Power and Kaynes Technology. Also present were professors from Stanford University, University of California San Diego and IIT Bhubaneswar.
