There are airs of refreshing renewal in the National Assembly that invite hope. The Citizen Revolution maintains, in practice, its veto power, although it did not achieve a majority that would allow it to undertake reforms without listening to other blocs. On the other side of the regional and ideological spectrum, the Construye Movement, led by assassinated presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, is making inroads with force. It is a very different party from the one it was in its beginnings; now, knowledgeable as few of the true mechanisms of power. The best way to honor the memory of Fernando Villavicencio would be to give rise, from now on, to a well-intentioned debate, with height and intelligence, that prioritizes the future of the country over small flashes of fame on social media.
The heartfelt absence of some assembly members that many believed essential invites us to remember that not everything is media and gimmicky. The country is broader than the Plenary, the needs are deep and urgent. Although certain schools invite you to think that everything is reduced to ‘marketing’, the citizens demonstrated with their vote that they want solutions before ideology, violence and revenge.
The question remains about Pachakutik, since it would be a mistake to assume that his absence, as well as the very low vote for Yaku Pérez, means that the indigenous movement and its capacity for mobilization have weakened.
The elections on August 20 open up an interesting opportunity to generational relief. Suddenly, after the recent assassination, new generations and niche voters showed an interest in the politics that could have turned the election around. Those voters expect this new Assembly to function to legislate and facilitate some governance that the previous one was owed to the country.
