An aviation expert revealed: this is the safest seat in the event of a plane crash

Passengers book airplane seats for different reasons – some prefer more legroom, others want to sit by the window, and there are those who make sure to be at the front of the plane to get off first. But is there a seat that can be safe in the unlikely event of a crash? Honestly, there’s no need to worry when you get on a flight, but if you’re still worried and wondering how you can be safer, you should read this.

According to aviation expert Doug Drury, a professor at Central Queensland University, the middle seats in the last rows are statistically the safest, in case the plane crashes. “The middle seats are safer than those near the window or the aisle,” he said. Investigations conducted over the last 35 years found that the lowest fatality rate (28%) belonged to the middle back seats, compared to 44% in the aisle seats in the middle of the plane.

In addition, he noted that: “Sitting near the exit can ensure a safer escape in case of an emergency – as long as there is no fire in that area.” Drury also explained that the safe seat may vary from plane to plane, but the cases may be similar for all planes.

About 229 people died last year in 12 plane crashes and disasters around the world, FlightGlobal reported. Last March, 123 passengers and nine crew members died when a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 crashed. But plane crashes are not very common. According to the US National Safety Council, the chance of dying in a flight is about one in 205,552, compared to one in 102 in a car.
