/ The US Geological Survey confirmed that an earthquake shook the greater New York area, on Friday, with reports from residents that they felt the shaking across the East Coast.

The earthquake was reported to have an initial magnitude of 4.8, centered near New Jersey.

The New York Fire Department announced that there were no initial reports of damage.

People also reported feeling the quake in neighboring states of Connecticut and Massachusetts, with the Weather Channel reporting that it was noticeable in Boston, and residents in Philadelphia reported feeling it as well.

New York Governor Kathy Hokul posted on X that the quake was felt across the state: “The team is assessing the impacts and any damage that may have occurred.”

The earthquake on August 23, 2011, which shook hundreds of millions of people from Georgia to Canada, sparked memories. Its magnitude reached 5.8, and it was the strongest earthquake to hit the East Coast since World War II. Its headquarters was in Virginia.
