Five people died in a fall from a hotel elevator in the town of Usud, on the island of Bali (Indonesia) on Friday. The victims were hotel employees, aged 19 to 24, it said. The Guardian this Wednesday.

The employees had taken the inclined elevator, resembling a cable car, which connects two parts of the hotel. As the cabin descended, the cable gave way and the occupants were thrown a hundred meters lower.

A cable not strong enough

The cabin was in fact passing over a ravine at the time of the incident. Two of the victims died instantly. The others were treated by emergency services and urgently evacuated to a hospital, where they finally succumbed to their serious injuries. “The steel rope was not strong enough to carry a rather high weight and the blocking system and the safety brake did not work,” local police chief Made Uder commented on Monday.

The first information gathered by the police, however, showed that no security system was present on the elevator. The governor of Bali, Cok Ace, however, assured that he had seen a document attesting that the elevator was up to standard during an inspection visit in November 2022. In images filmed in 2019, we see the cabin supported by three cables. However, the system only had one at the time of the tragedy.

The investigators concluded that the cables would have failed one by one, without ever being replaced, explains the Bali Tribune. The investigations are continuing and the hotel guests have been relocated elsewhere. The owner of the establishment announced that he would take care of the funerals of the five deceased employees. In exchange, he asked the families not to press charges against his company.
