An emergency channel arrives for revenge porn victims

by time news

Time.news – Against Revenge porn, one of the most hateful forms of violence against women and more, in general, against non-consensual pornography, the Guarantor for the protection of personal data has decided to make an emergency channel available on its website. People who fear that their intimate photos or videos may be disseminated without their consent on Facebook or Instagram can report this risk and have the images blocked.

The preventive reporting channel is the one activated last year in Italy, as a pilot program, by Facebook and which has so far been accessible in our country only through a non-profit association.

From 8 March adults who fear that their intimate images, present in photos and videos, will be shared, can therefore contact the Privacy Guarantor, by consulting the page www.gpdp.it/revengeporn, to report their existence in a secure and confidential way to Facebook and have them blocked. On the page prepared by the Guarantor, potential victims of non-consensual pornography will find a form to fill in to provide the Authority with useful information to evaluate the case and to indicate to the interested party the link to directly upload the images to the program.

Once loaded, the images will be encrypted by Facebook using a “hash” code, so as to become unrecognizable before being destroyed and, through a comparison technology, blocked by possible attempts to publish them on the two platforms.

“We are delighted to be able to strengthen our pilot project against non-consensual pornography thanks to the precious collaboration of the Privacy Guarantor,” said Laura Bononcini, Public Policy Director Southern Europe at Facebook. He added: “We have conducted extensive research in this area and collaborated with many international security organizations to review and improve our response to this serious problem and, through our technology, we want to offer valid and effective tools to victims. We will continue to work to ensure that people feel safe on our platforms and can always find in us an ally to protect themselves from any online abuse “.

The pilot program is designed for potential victims who fear that their intimate images may be published without their consent. In cases, however, in which intimate images or videos have already been shared without consent, it is always possible to make a report on Facebook or Instagram. Again Facebook is able to minimize the damage by using the same combination of fingerprint and photo matching technology so they are not shared again.

Facebook, using machine learning and artificial intelligence, is also able to proactively detect nude images or videos that are shared without permission on Facebook and Instagram.
