The exhibition presents coins minted in Azemmour during the reigns of the different dynasties that ruled Morocco, in the form of a circuit, which also highlights the architectural and urban richness of the BAM Agency building in El Jadida, inaugurated in 1923 and classified as national heritage in 2022.

Speaking on this occasion, Mustapha Jmahri, writer and researcher specializing in the history of the city of El Jadida, discussed the different stages that this Agency, one of the first local representations of the Central Bank, has gone through, including its construction in 1922 by two renowned architects, before its inauguration the following year, noting, in a statement to MAP, that the architecture of this building is largely inspired by the structure of the Portuguese City of El Jadida.

He stressed that “the decoration and the use of marble in the floor of the building, among others, highlight the work of Moroccan craftsmen who contributed to the construction of this historic monument,” noting that the celebration of the centenary of the Bank Al-Maghrib Agency in El Jadida sheds light on the role it played economically at the national and local levels.

The president of the Doukkala Memory Association for the Preservation of Heritage, Abdelahad Fassi-Fehri, stressed, for his part, “the importance of preserving historical monuments so that they remain places of life housing banking, administrative, cultural or other activities.”

He also praised the action of Bank Al-Maghrib in this context, as it provides a fine example of the preservation of places of memory. He also specified that “the interest given to history, to the link between monuments and the past, strengthens our attachment to heritage”, calling, in this regard, to integrate the preservation and enhancement of heritage into global policies of economic, social and cultural development.

The commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of the BAM Agency in El Jadida, which continues until December 29, includes a range of activities, including cultural and artistic workshops led by local artists for schoolchildren in El Jadida, in addition to the broadcast on this occasion of a video retracing the key dates in the history of the El Jadida agency.

Also on the agenda are two conferences, led by historians of the city. The first was held on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of the city, in collaboration with the Doukkala Memory Association for the Preservation of Heritage, under the themes “Preservation of the heritage of Doukkala” and “the history of the banking sector in El Jadida”. As for the second conference, it is scheduled for Thursday, December 28 to address “the place of Doukkala in Moroccan monetary history”.
