An exhibition of works by the outstanding Georgian artist Lado Gudiashvili opened at the Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku.

As Day.Az reported on Thursday, the exhibition was organized on the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Center with the support of the Georgian Embassy in Azerbaijan and the Lado Gudiashvili Foundation in Georgia.

Before the event, representative of the Lado Gudiashvili Foundation, great-granddaughter of the artist Elizabed Lordkipanidze, in an interview with journalists, said that the personal exhibition presented the artist’s works from the Parisian period to the end of his life. His graphic works and paintings are also exhibited here.

In conclusion, the artist’s great-granddaughter mentioned that the cooperation between the Heydar Aliyev Center and the Lado Gudiashvili Foundation is of great importance, and her grandfather had a special relationship with the Azerbaijani people. She thanked the Heydar Aliyev Center for organizing the exhibition at such a high level.

It was noted that the works of the legendary artist in painting, graphics and stage design are being demonstrated in Azerbaijan for the first time.

First Deputy Director of the Heydar Aliyev Center Fargan Novruzov, who spoke at the event, shared with the guests several special points about the exhibition.

“The works presented at the exhibition belong specifically to the family of Lado Gudiashvili. Here the master’s paintings are sorted by the genres in which they were painted. The exhibition also presents various collections of works by Lado Gudiashvili,” said F. Novruzov.

He also expressed gratitude to the Lado Gudiashvili Foundation and the Georgian Embassy in Azerbaijan for hosting this exhibition.

Georgian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Zurab Pataradze noted that friendly and fraternal relations have always existed between the two countries.

“Our ties are successfully developing both in the political and economic spheres; I would like to especially note humanitarian and cultural ties,” the ambassador emphasized.

He also mentioned that with the participation of the prime ministers of Azerbaijan and Georgia, the foundation of the Azerbaijan Drama Theater named after Heydar Aliyev was laid in Tbilisi.

“Recently, a memorial plaque to the outstanding Georgian poet Nikoloz Baratashvili was unveiled in Ganja. Also, the Georgian State Drama Theater in the village of Alibeyli, Gakh region, was named after the outstanding Georgian writer Ilya Chavchavadze,” said Z. Pataradze.

The diplomat added that the exhibition will last three months and visitors will enjoy it.

“The Georgian spirit, Georgian traditions and Georgian hospitality are reflected in the works of Lado Gudiashvili,” the ambassador said.

Zurab Pataradze expressed gratitude to the Lado Gudiashvili Foundation, the State Museum of Georgia, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Heydar Aliyev Center for organizing the exhibition.

Chairman of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan, People’s Artist Farhad Khalilov, speaking about the work of Lado Gudiashvili, said that the master began to draw from an early age, and his art still amazes everyone.

The founder of the Lado Gudiashvili Foundation, Anna Meliva, expressed gratitude to the Azerbaijani state and everyone who contributed to the organization of this exhibition.

Then the guests got acquainted with the exhibition.

Graduates of the Baku Academy of Choreography presented Georgian dance to the guests.

Let us note that many of the works in this exhibition attract attention. First of all, Gudiashvili’s graphic works should be noted. Among them are costume sketches written for a ballet that was never staged. Although the ballet performance did not take place, the sketches were preserved as the artist’s immortal memory.

Lado Gudiashvili’s first exhibition took place in Tbilisi when he was 19 years old, thanks to which the young artist received wide recognition in Georgian artistic circles. Gudiashvili, who became a legend thanks to his works, occupied a special place in the cultural life of Tbilisi immediately after organizing his first exhibition.

Lado Gudiashvili’s idol was the legendary Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani. He turned to his image several times in his works. The artist gained fame in Europe. He was particularly well known in the art world of Paris, where he lived for five years, and won recognition among art lovers for his exhibitions in a number of European cities, as well as in New York.

Lado Gudiashvili’s communication with world-famous artists Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Sergei Yesenin left a unique mark on the works he created. Gudiashvili established himself as an artist who depicted reality through a personal approach, and at the same time as a careful observer and psychologist, masterfully depicting an endless range of emotions on the faces of his characters.

Lado Gudiashvili died in 1980. He was distinguished by his artistic outlook and special style and is considered one of the founders of Georgian modernism and the Tbilisi avant-garde movement.

The exhibition of the artist’s works at the Heydar Aliyev Center will be available until April 24.
