“It will be difficult to see how it survives,” explains Francis Fukuyama, about the possibility of the country giving in on Crimea or Donbas.

The War in Eastern Europe is in a stagnation phase in Bakhmut. With the Russian forces exhausted, the Ukrainian army is advancing in the last hours. According to Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyar, Putin’s troops have already been pushed back 2 kilometers.

“The Russians have been losing a tremendous number of people trying to take this small town, Bakhmut, in Donbas,” defends Francis Fukuyama, a geopolitical expert, on Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty. “But everyone is waiting for a Ukrainian offensive, and I think it will be essential for this war to come to an end“, he affirms.

The main focuses of interest are Crimea and Donbas. “I don’t see either party agreeing to grant. It would be hard to see how Putin survives that.”, it states. “The thing is, the Ukrainians don’t even have to take back Crimea,” she recalls. “They can cut it off and at any time they can apply a lot of pressure that the Russians will feel. And so it would be a huge strategic advantage for them to be able to do that,” he adds.

After more than a year of war, it is difficult to think of a solution with Crimea “There is also the question of whether Ukraine would be willing to cede part of Donbas,” he explains. “If the Ukrainians can liberate these two regions in the south, particularly Jerson and Zaporiyiathey would be in a position of a real negotiation“, he clarifies.

Giving up part of Donbas “could be a kind of ceasefire, which could have a chance of holding for a while,” he says. However, “it would be very bad for Ukraine. It would give the Russians a good chunk of Ukrainian territory and That would not be a good situation,” he concludes.
